Once
upon a time, there was a beautiful Javaness princess named Roro Jongrang. She
was the daughter of King Prabu Baka. One day, a handsome young man with super
natural power, named Bandung Bondowoso killed Prabu Baka.
When
Bandung Bondowoso saw princess Roro Jongrang, he fell in love and wanted to
marry her. However, Princess Roro Jongrang didn’t want to marry Bandung because
he had killed her father but, she was afraid of Bandung. So to refuse politely,
she made a condition. “I will marry you but you have to build one thousand
temples in one night as the wedding gift.” Requested Roro Jongrang.
Surprisingly, Bandung agreed with this impossible condition. With the helped of
the spirits of demons, Bandung Bondowoso started building the temples.
Approaching midnight, the work was almost done. Roro Jongrang knew and thought,
“What shall I do? Bandung is smarter than me. I will lose against him.” Suddenly
she got an idea. She woke up all the women in the palace and ordered them to
make noisy sounds of grinding rice so that the roosters would think it had
already dawn. Of course, the roosters crowed and this made spirits of demon went
away because they were afraid of the sun light. Bandung Bondowoso was confused
on seeing the spirits of demon went away. The next morning, Roro Jongrang came
to the temple, she count the temple, “There is only 999 temples, you failed to
fulfill my condition.” Then Bandung became mad and turned Roro Jongrang into a
statue with magic spell. He put Roro Jongrang’s statue on the top of the
temple.
And
